Western Sea Kayakers Club posts
From various members of the Western Sea Kayakers Club:
We went last year and enjoyed hanging out. I didn't even realize that we could compete. Then we saw Joanne and Jie were competing in the novice division (and Jie won 2nd place), and wandering around all geared up so they inspired me to want to participate this year.
Signing up helped Ed and me get focused on kayak surfing over the last couple of months. During the festival it was really fun to be part of the event. I highly recommend signing up just to help with getting focused and participating.
At the B Site Meeting on Sat. morning I started getting quite nervous with all the rules and regulations and wondered what I had got myself into.
Hooray Ed and Donna and Joanne for the WSK sweep! It was great
seeing you guys out there and also Anders who was competing for the first time at the "A" site. We're all standing (surfing?) on the shoulders of giants--the strong WSK turnout at SCSKF 09 speaks huge volumes for Buck whose influence and mentorship I think has inspired so many of us long boaters to embrace short-boat surfing!-- Lucy
Saturday the waves were so small and unintimidating that I decided to do my best to relax and enjoy myself. Just Joanne and I were in our heat, so we politely took turns catching the waves. The challenge was once we caught the waves we had about 20 feet to surf before we would go crashing into the rocks.
Sunday I was nervous that the waves would be too chaotic, but they were actually pretty decent. It was strange to have people hanging out on the cliffs cheering us on, but was also fun. Just Ed and I were in our heat together and that was a real highlight getting to surf at this prime location, just the two of us.
I mainly just caught waves, screamed, and tried to stay on them. Somehow I managed to stay upright. It was a real high, but also an exhausting 20 minutes!
It was exciting to have a WSK sweep, with Ed in third, Joanne in second, and to my thrill and surprise, me in first.
I would have liked to demo some of the surf boats, but didn't get a chance to do that.
