17th Annual
Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival
March 14th-16th, 2003
The 17th Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival was an epic performance
of kayak surfers and our ocean. We had surf that at times produced
30 foot drops. We had blustery on shore winds, offshore gusts that
threw 10-foot rooster tails off 15 foot storm chop, and we had smooth
glassy 15 foot swells that filled the contestant that chanced to be
there with awe. The conditions seemed to change with every heat. The
kayak athletes that were there showed the skills and the heart necessary
to play in such massive energy. The kayak athletes in the event proclaimed
to all the water people that surf kayaks deserve a place in the line
up. And their courage and compassion in the act of aiding the rescue
of their fellow athletes was an example of the nobleness of this wonderful
group of people. It was quite an event and all were touched.
