The 18th Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival for 2004 was the largest attended event in its history. It had a class of athletes that were equipped with latest in surf craft and the high level of talents these vehicles require. Our "B" site for novices and intermediate were full with athletes looking for fun and a chance to learn more about this wonderful sport. None seemed intimidated by last years' giant surf reaching 30-foot faces. When asked what she'd rather have, big surf or bikini weather, Jamie Cooper of US Team West chose sun. She got her wish. To quote Gary Luhm, the kayak photographer, "The 2004 Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival featured waves so small they were drowned out by the bark of the sea lions and the squeal of offshore otter pups." However, the test of a surf athlete is not their abilities on smooth, glassy 12-foot swells, but on talents that shine in any water energy. It will be agreed by all present that the surf kayakers that made it to the finals used their skills to make these waves shine. The pictures of surf kayak photographers Michael Francisco, Kate Falconer, Gary Luhm and Grace Iannotti will testify to the heights that these athletes and craft have achieved. My hat is off to all who participated.
