20th Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival

You are invited to the 2006 Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival (SCKSF)-the Greatest Show in the Surf Kayaking World. This year’s event will have some exciting changes that grew out of the 2005 World Championships in Costa Rica. There is a new HP Expert Class that is restricted to surf vehicles under 9 feet. We call this class World Cup in that it will add points to qualify you for the US West Team for the 2007 World Championships in Spain. The SCKSF is also one of the 5 events in the new 2006 World Cup Invitational, an event designed to choose the supreme international HP athlete. The finals for this event will be in Thurso, Scotland. With manufacturers, Rodeo Champions, and a host of the best kayak surfers on the planet, there should be plenty of stoke to go around. We owe this all to one of the best breaks on earth-Steamer Lane.

The SCKSF is two contests in one. We have an expert event at the Steamer Lane Site that can produce 15-foot plus wave heights, while at the same time a ¼ mile away we can have gentle 3-5 foot swells for Novice and Intermediate events at the Cowells Site. The festival was devised as a vehicle for learning, pairing the best wave magicians on the planet with those just entering the surf scene so that all may grow. We spice the event with nightly town parties for maximum mixing of ideas. The Cowells Site HP event is a true Open Class in which any kayak under 4 meters can enter. Roy Scafidi of Island Wave Ski will award the high point winner of the Intermediate Classes with a gift certificate worth $1000 toward a new custom ordered Island Waveski.

The new West Coast Surf Kayaking Association is planning pre-contest surf clinics to be staffed by former members of the 2005 World Champion US West Coast Team, structured to get more athletes excited about kayak surfing.
