Boat Rules

Maximum length of any participant's boat cannot exceed 4 meters. All boats must have float bags for buoyancy; all boaters must wear life jackets and a helmet. The organizers reserve the right to disqualify any equipment, disqualify any person, or change any event for safety reasons. Any contestant who engages in unsafe surfing in the area before the contest, fails to check in, attend contestant's meeting, comply with contest rules or sign a waiver will not be allowed to compete.
Helmets and PFDs: Helmets and approved PFDs (Personal Flotation Device) are required while surfing in this competition.
Boats must have rounded ends: All kayaks must have a minimum diameter of 50mm (allowing for 6mm protuberance) in the plan view.
Boats must have buoyancy and must float if filled with water: The bows of all kayaks must be fitted with a full height vertical pillar, that extends from seat to bow or have a bulkhead type footrest or solid buoyancy filling the bow beyond the footrests. The sterns of all kayaks must have the maximum practical space filled with buoyancy, i.e. air bags or foam.
All boats (including HP boats) must have end grabs or toggles: End grabs should be sited no more than 300 mm from either end of the kayak. Kayaks with end grabs sited more than 300 mm from either end must have knotted tails fitted which reach the end of the craft. Tails must reach the end of the kayak and have a minimum width of 25 mm if webbing, or 8 mm diameter if rope. If toggles are used, they must be at least 75mm in length and 20mm in diameter and when mounted in the "T" position must stand 50mm clear of the deck.

Practice and Warm Up

Due to the popularity of surfing in the area of Santa Cruz, practice and warm-up for the contest at Steamer's Lane will create additional pressure on a normally over-crowded situation. In order to maintain a good relationship with the surfing community, use of the Santa Cruz area beaches is not recommended.

Surf Etiquette

Please remember to use surf etiquette when surfing in the Santa Cruz area prior to the contest. All surfers, both kayakers and boards do not appreciate guests who break the "rules" in the name of a practice session. Any contestant who surfs in an aggressive or unsafe way will not be allowed to compete. Please try to surf less crowded breaks - remember: the ocean belongs to every one. more..

Cost

The cost per expert event is $115, and $80 per intermediate and novice events. The cost reflects an increased surcharge imposed by the city of Santa Cruz.

Refunds

No refunds after March 1st. There will be no refunds due to weather, failure of contestant to arrive, conflicts with other events or contestants who sign-up for categories held at other locations. Categories with less than four (4) contestants may be canceled. Full refund is available if your category is full or cancelled.
